A newsletter is one of the few channels you fully control. For developers and founders, it’s a way to stay in touch without depending on algorithms.
Why it fits indies
- You own the list: Unlike social reach, your subscribers are yours. No platform can take them away.
- Direct communication: Launch updates, share learnings or ask for feedback without fighting for visibility.
- Trust over time: Regular, useful emails build a relationship that can turn into customers or advocates.
When to start
- You have at least a few posts or a product and something to say regularly (e.g. once or twice a month).
- You’re ready to commit to a simple schedule rather than “when I have time.”
How to keep it simple
- Tool: Use a provider like Buttondown, ConvertKit or Substack. Start with one; you can migrate later.
- Signup: Add a form on your blog and product site. One clear CTA is enough.
- Content: Mix product updates, short tutorials and honest learnings. One main idea per email.
- Frequency: Start with monthly or biweekly. Consistency beats volume.
You don’t need thousands of subscribers to benefit. A small, engaged list is more valuable than a large, cold one.
